Steve Welby became the Federal Defender for the Southern District of Illinois in February of 2017. He has practiced law for over 25 years after graduating from Washington University School of Law in 1991. Steve was a member of the Washington University Law Review, the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Barristers. He also graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in History from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Steve started his legal career at the law firm of Thompson Coburn and later served six years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the St. Louis Criminal Division. From 2003 to 2017 he worked as a criminal defense attorney in private practice and served on the Criminal Justice Act Panel. Steve is on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America Greater St. Louis Area Council and Camp Rainbow - a charity providing camping experience for children with cancer.
